TOWING & RELIABILITY

Towing in Central Oregon: Diesel Truck Maintenance Before Mountain Grades

By Pure Auto Works • Bend, Oregon • Automotive Education

Prepare diesel pickups for towing in Central Oregon with checks of cooling, transmission, brakes, tires and exhaust systems.

Why towing changes the maintenance equation

Pulling a trailer increases load on the engine, transmission, cooling system, brakes and tires. High ambient temperatures and long grades can make existing weaknesses obvious. Vehicle ratings vary by configuration; consult the door placard, owner’s manual and manufacturer towing guidance rather than assuming all trucks with the same engine can tow the same weight.

Cooling system before a long trip

Inspect for coolant leaks, damaged hoses, radiator airflow restrictions and abnormal fan operation. Watch temperature behavior under load, and address any existing overheating complaint before a trip. Never remove a hot coolant cap. A cooling system that performs adequately unloaded may struggle when climbing grades with a trailer.

Transmission heat and shift behavior

Heat can accelerate transmission fluid degradation. Follow manufacturer guidance on towing modes, temperature warnings and maintenance intervals. If the truck slips, shudders, delays engagement or shows transmission warnings, diagnose the concern before hauling heavy loads.

Brakes and trailer equipment

Check truck brakes for wear, hydraulic concerns and uneven operation. Confirm trailer brakes, breakaway system, lighting and connections are functional where applicable. Adjust speed and following distance for total weight and road conditions. Engine or exhaust braking can help on grades when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions, but it does not replace functioning service brakes.

Tires, load and stability

Check truck and trailer tire pressure against appropriate placards and load requirements, inspect tread and sidewalls, and confirm tires are rated for the actual load. Proper weight distribution and hitch setup matter. All-wheel or four-wheel drive does not increase braking grip on slippery pavement.

A practical pre-tow inspection

Review fluid services, fuel and air filters, batteries, cooling, brakes, tires, suspension and active warning lights. Keep records of recurring issues and address them before the busy season. Pure Auto Works can help Bend-area truck owners plan maintenance for towing and demanding work.
